Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Review

"The premium controller option for Switch. Excellent build quality and comfort, but the price and D-pad issues hold it back."

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the premium alternative to Joy-Cons, offering a traditional gamepad experience for those who prefer comfort over portability.

Build Quality

The Pro Controller feels premium in your hands. The textured grips, satisfying button clicks, and comfortable weight make extended gaming sessions a pleasure. The gyroscope and HD Rumble features from the Joy-Cons are preserved, ensuring full feature parity.

Battery Life

With an advertised 40-hour battery life, the Pro Controller easily outlasts the competition. USB-C charging is convenient, and the controller can last weeks between charges with regular use.

The D-Pad Question

The D-pad has been controversial since launch. Some units register unintended diagonal inputs, which is particularly problematic for fighting games and 2D platformers. Nintendo has quietly improved this in later manufacturing runs, but it remains a concern for used purchases.

Value

At $70/£60, the Pro Controller is expensive. Third-party alternatives offer similar features for less, though none match the build quality and first-party support. For serious Switch players, it is nearly essential.
